What is Image to Text (OCR)?
Image to Text uses OCR (optical character recognition) to pull the text out of photos, screenshots, scanned pages and receipts so you can copy, edit and search it. Drop an image or paste a screenshot, choose the language, and get editable text in seconds.
Recognition runs on your device with Tesseract, the open-source OCR engine, so documents like ID cards, bills and contracts are never uploaded. It supports English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Spanish, French, German and more.
How to use Image to Text (OCR)
Get it done in 4 simple steps — no installation or account needed.
- Choose the language of the text in your image.
- Drop an image, choose one, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on Mac).
- Wait while the text is recognized — the first use of each language downloads its data once.
- Copy the text or download it as a .txt file. Check names and numbers before using them.
Limitations & supported browsers
Works in the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (Mac, iPhone and iPad) and Samsung Internet. Because processing happens on your device, speed and maximum file size depend on your device’s memory.
- Best for printed text in clear, well-lit images. Handwriting, low resolution and decorative fonts reduce accuracy.
- Each language’s recognition data downloads once (typically 2–15 MB) and is then cached.
- Layout such as columns and tables is not preserved — the output is plain text.

Image to Text (OCR) — frequently asked questions
How accurate is the OCR?
Clear, high-contrast printed text is usually recognized very accurately. Handwriting, low-resolution photos, unusual fonts and busy backgrounds reduce accuracy — always proofread important details.
Can it read handwriting?
Only neat, print-like handwriting. Tesseract is designed for printed text, so cursive handwriting will not be recognized reliably.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything is processed locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device, and nothing is stored on our side.
