What is Base64 Encode / Decode?

Base64 Encode / Decode converts text and files to Base64 and back. Base64 represents binary data using only letters, digits and a few symbols, which makes it safe to embed in JSON, HTML, CSS, emails and URLs.

This tool fully supports UTF-8, so emoji and non-English characters encode correctly, and offers URL-safe Base64 for tokens and links. Files can be turned into Base64 strings for data URIs. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Base64 Encode / Decode — frequently asked questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it. Never use it to protect secrets.

Why is Base64 output larger than the input?

Base64 uses 4 characters for every 3 bytes, so encoded data is about 33% larger than the original.

What is URL-safe Base64?

It replaces “+” with “-” and “/” with “_” and removes “=” padding so the string can be used safely in URLs.
