What is Background Remover?

Background Remover cuts the subject out of any photo automatically using AI. Drop in a product shot, a portrait, a pet or a logo, and in a few seconds you get a clean cutout with a transparent background — ready to download as a PNG, or placed on a solid color or a soft blur of the original.

Unlike other background removers, AppsOcean never uploads your photo. The AI model (BiRefNet, an open MIT-licensed segmentation model) is downloaded once and runs entirely on your device using WebGPU, so private photos, ID pictures and unreleased product images stay with you. On older browsers without WebGPU, a lighter model optimized for people is used automatically.

How to use Background Remover

Get it done in 4 simple steps — no installation or account needed.

  1. Drop a photo onto the upload area, click to choose one, or paste an image with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on Mac).
  2. The first time, the AI model downloads once (about 94 MB) and is then cached in your browser. After that, it starts in seconds.
  3. Wait a few seconds while the background is removed, then drag the slider to compare before and after.
  4. Keep it transparent or pick a background color or blur, then click Download. Transparent images save as PNG; images with a background save as JPG.

Limitations & supported browsers

Works in the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (Mac, iPhone and iPad) and Samsung Internet. Because processing happens on your device, speed and maximum file size depend on your device’s memory.

  • The best model needs WebGPU (recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Samsung Internet). Without it, a lighter model is used that works well on people but may miss products, pets and objects.
  • The first use downloads about 94 MB (or about 6 MB for the lighter model). It is cached afterwards — but on mobile data you may prefer Wi-Fi for the first run.
  • Fine details like flyaway hair, glass, smoke and see-through fabric can look slightly soft or partially removed.
  • Photos larger than 16 megapixels are scaled down to 16 MP so they fit in browser memory, especially on iPhone and iPad.
  • Images with several subjects or busy backgrounds may need a cleaner photo for a perfect cutout.

Background Remover — frequently asked questions

Why does the first use take longer?

The AI model (about 94 MB) downloads the first time and is then stored in your browser’s cache, so later visits start in seconds. On slower devices, processing itself can take 10–30 seconds per image.

How do I make a white background?

After the background is removed, choose the white swatch and click Download — you’ll get a JPG with a clean white background.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, on recent versions of Chrome (Android) and Safari (iPhone and iPad). On devices without WebGPU, a lighter model that works best on photos of people is used.

Are my photos uploaded to remove the background?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your own device. Your photo never leaves it — only the model files (from Hugging Face) and the AI runtime (from jsDelivr) are downloaded.
